Google 3-Pack for Small Business Owners
Written by The Review Agency on Jun. 17th 2019
Let’s talk about a few of the rules that control the search engines. In particular, here are 3 rules posted on Google’s website you should always follow to avoid having your business pushed down or taken off search completely:

1. Stuffing web pages with keywords, or hiding keywords and elements on a page to “trick” Google about what’s actually on it.

2. Buying links and using other illegitimate tactics to deceive Google.

3. Creating multiple copies of a page, otherwise known as duplicate copy.

Now, these rules are constantly changing to prevent spammers and scammers from exploiting search engines for their own personal gain.

But, what can an honest, hard-working business do to use these search engines for their own advantage? And, how can they stay at the top of search results when the rules and algorithms that control aren’t written in clear writing and change without any notice?

Well, as a business owner, especially one that intends to use the internet to attract customers, it’s very important to understand which changes are being made and how it can have an impact on your business.

So, let’s talk about an update Google made to their platform which is known as the Google 3-Pack.

Here's the story about ChimTech (one of our clients). They’re a small local business in Maine offering chimney related services for their community.

You can see the “Old” Google search result and the “New” Google search result, side-by-side below.

ChimTech followed all the recommended steps to bring their business online. They made a website. They started a Facebook page. They did everything they were “SUPPOSED TO DO” to find new customers using the internet.

Well… Guess what happened?

They received 1 negative review and all their efforts, all their time, all their money spent to grow their business online… HIT A WALL.

You see, we all know that customer testimonials have a strong influence over other people’s decisions.

Let’s say a homeowner searched “chimney cleaning company in Maine” and they see the following two businesses appear in the search results.

Which company do you think they’re most likely to choose?

Right, the obvious choice would be Maine Chimney Services. They have a 4.5-star rating from 8 different people vs. a 1-star rating from 1 person.

By the way, if you notice, these are real screenshots which come from the “Old” Google search results and the “New” updated, Google 3-Pack.

Before this change, if someone searched for a local business they would see up to 7 different businesses at the top page of their search result. Did you notice this change?

Google was giving away 7 spots for local businesses to be featured with their Name, Address, and Phone Number.

And, we didn’t mention this before, but, do you know why this section of Google is so important?

Well, there’s a lot of different research online, however, our research found that between 71 to 93% of people click on a link from the first page with 6% of clicks resulting on the second page.

This means, if you were the 1 in 7 businesses being featured by Google, there was a high probability of people clicking to visit your website or contacting your business.

So, what changed? Take a look on the screenshot below.

As you can see, Google reduced the number of businesses being featured from 7 to 3. They also included a local map so people can see the exact location of those businesses in the place they’re searching.

This means if you were being featured in Google’s 7-Pack listing, but didn’t make the top 3, that’s 71 to 93% of people who click on 1st-page results no longer seeing your business.

Do you see why it’s so important for small local business owners to understand search engines? It’s especially important to understand the changes they make which can lead to a dramatic impact on the number of new customers you could be gaining or losing.
